What to Do After Your Move in Lakewood, CA; Prep Before Unpacking, Distributing & More

After the process of packing your home, selling off or donating what you don’t want and taking care of the arrangements, arriving in your new home in a distant land can be overwhelming. As you stare down at a whole stack of boxes and bags after your move, you are often left wondering where to even start, especially if you are exhausted from packing, traveling, and unpacking can leave you with little motivation. But before you remove the first bit of tape from your boxes, we at Prodigy Moving & Storage would like to offer these few pointers to consider in an effort to help you save some time and hassle.

What to Do when You Move into a New House?

1) Prep before you unpack. Before you start unpacking everything, take the time to clean and paint your new home or perform any quick alterations like replacing carpets and so on. Install new toilet seats, personal touches like personalized shower curtains, curtains or drapes, and other such additions. Getting the work done prior to unpacking can make the process simpler and smoother. Wiping down the baseboards, vacuuming the carpets, and take care of any errant cobwebs before you set out to taking out your pictures, shelves, and other decorations out is a lot easier.
2) Distribution. After all the cleaning and upgrading is completed, start putting the boxes into the appropriate room, if the professional crew didn’t do it already. For example, all the kitchen boxes should be taken into the kitchen, bedroom boxes, bathroom boxes, and so on. Tackle one room at a time, as it will help you keep focused and organized as you take on the unpacking. Start with the priority boxes first and be sure to take your time and don’t overwhelm yourself by setting unrealistic goals. In addition to making the process go by more smoothly, it will also help keep you from feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work you have ahead of you.
3) De-clutter. Even after the purge of downsizing your home, as you unpack your home you may start to notice that you held onto stuff that you really didn’t need to. Looking into tossing the junk selling the valuables, and donating the items in between can help you keep your home organized in the long run. Keep this process organized as well and have 3 distinct designated areas out of the way. If you do not want to deal with the hassle of selling your possessions, donate them to a charity or donation center. You will end up with a much calmer and easier time by taking a bit of time to organize yourself after your move and getting familiar with your new surroundings. The less stress you have when moving to a new city the easier it will be adjusting.
